
Most book people bemoan the continuing disappearance of brick and mortar book stores. New York City has been particularly hard hit, primarily due to super expensive rents. It was while working as a clerk at Gotham Book Mart in 1989 that I originally started studying bookbinding.
But now movie theaters are closing, again due to high rent according to the New York Times.
What next?!?
It’s a universal problem, Jeff, unfortunately. Many historical bookshops are closing in Barcelona. And I recently was in Split (Croatia) where there was the oldest bookshop still open in Europe, and sadly it had just been recently closed. So it isn’t the oldest opened bookshop anymore… Here’s the image of the bookshop:
